Forget The Physics. Look For The FIRE.
Probably the single most important factor to the beauty of a diamond is the quality of the cut. If a diamond is cut well, it brings out the true fire and beauty of the stone. If a diamond is cut poorly, the diamond becomes a clear rock on her finger.
When I am looking at the quality of a cut, I am looking at refraction of light, the measurement of angles, the table size, the centering of the culet, and all sorts of other tiny variables. When you look at the quality of a cut, you should look for fire. When you look at a diamond, look for the sparkle factor. The more it sparkles, the better the cut. Oh, and if in doubt, ask. We could talk about diamonds for days.
Proper cut compared to thin and thick cuts. The correct cut, or ideal cut, is that which reflects the most light back to the eye.
